HARMFUL PROJECTS

SANGARÉDI BAUXITE MINE

LOCATION: Guinea
RELATIONSHIP: Rio Tinto is a majority owner (45%) of Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée, the mine operator.

IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Since it began operations in 1973, Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG) has treated rural land as state property, grabbing farmland without the free, prior and informed consent of local communities, without paying compensation, and without following a public expropriation process as required by law. CBG has failed in many cases to rehabilitate the agricultural land it has strip mined or to replace critical water sources destroyed or polluted by its mining activities. In some cases, entire villages have been relocated to resettlement sites that lack adequate housing, water or arable land. These harmful practices, along with the failure to provide tangible benefits to host communities, have caused enormous frustration amongst the local population. In April and September of 2017, thousands of young people rioted in the Boke region to protest bauxite mining’s pollution and power cuts. Several of the protesters were killed by security forces.

IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT AND BIODIVERSITY
Mining activity has contributed to the loss of critical habitats, including for endangered chimpanzees. Local residents report an unprecedented decline, and in some cases the total extinction, of certain species of wildlife and medicinal plants.
